Uncertainty and the Power of Our Culture

Greetings on an uncertain Saturday evening.

On Friday evening the NIH issued new guidance, adding more uncertainty regarding the way it supports research. I know this news is deeply concerning to all of us. On Tuesday, this and other topics will be discussed with our leadership at the GUMC Research Committee meeting. Be sure to join.

I have elected to take a deep breath and step away from writing more about this issue. Taking a deep breath does not mean inaction; we will work to preserve our research mission, even in these unpredictable times.

Meanwhile, Harriet and I attended today’s Georgetown basketball game, which Georgetown won rather handily, and I joined our BellRinger team at mid-court to receive an oversized check for more than $1.7M to celebrate the proceeds from our charity bike ride in October.

Please remember, that even in these uncertain times, cancer does not care about NIH edicts, IDCs or how we feel about these things. It merely wants to kill, and we need to stop it. I could not be prouder to work with all of you — all of us — because we have the power to make a difference — together. Thank you for all you do. With that in mind, let’s do everything possible to make this crazy world a better place this week.

Lou
